At approximately 2:00 a.m. on April 26, 1997, 27-year-old David Redowl and his 24-year-old sister, Sonja, had a physical altercation in the back yard of their mother's residence at 610 West 3rd Street in Sioux City, Iowa. Both Redowl and his sister listed that address as their home. The Sioux City Police and medical personnel were called at 2:07 a.m.

Upon arrival, David was found unconscious and pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. The cause of death was determined to be a stab wound to the chest. The victim also sustained other stab wounds to his extremities.

Because of conflicting witness statements and inconsistencies, no charges were ever filed and the case remains open.
