Mason City, Iowa
Jodi's apartment fronts on North Kentucky Avenue and her bedroom and living room windows are viewable from the parking lot. The Winnebago River, which was in flood at the time, is adjacent to her apartment. A large city park, a heavily forested area and a number of water-filled gravel pits are nearby. The nights of June 26th and 27th were warm and humid with intermittent rain. The US Naval Observatory Data Base shows that Civil Twilight began at 4:59 a.m. and Sunrise occurred at 5:35 a.m. on Tuesday, June 27th, 1995 in Mason City, IA.
A passing motorist saw what he believed to be a 1986 white Ford Econoline Van parked at the far east end of the building in which Jodi lived, and parked in such a way she would not easily see it as she exited the building. The vehicle had its engine running and its parking lights turned on.
When Jodi still hadn't arrived at work at 7:00 a.m., her co-anchor became alarmed and called the Mason City Police asking them to check on Jodi's well being. Upon arrival at the parking lot, police officers found a number of her personal possessions including: her hair spray, hair dryer, key ring and red high heeled shoes strewn about in the parking lot. Jodi usually carried these items to and from work in a canvas tote bag.
MCPD and IA DCI investigators subsequently found blood on the passenger's side rear view mirror of Jodi's 1995 red Mazda Miata sports car. The mirror had also been knocked ajar as by an impact. Blood also was found in the parking lot near the passenger's side door. DNA testing indicated the blood matched that of Ms. Huisentruit. Scuff marks found in the parking lot -- apparently made by Jodi's shoes -- led away from her vehicle. Interviews with neighbors revealed that screams had been heard.
Jodi's canvas tote bag -- in which she also often carried her notebooks and computer diskettes -- was not found at the scene and has never been discovered.
Despite 13 years of investigative efforts by the FBI, IA DCI, MCPD and several private investigators, no evidence of Jodi Huisentruit or her whereabouts has ever been found and the case remains unsolved.
